Joy in Righteous Poverty
The Master said, 'How admirable is Yan Hui! A single bowl of rice, a single ladle of water, living in a humble alley—others would find this unbearably distressing, yet Hui does not let it alter his joy. How admirable is Yan Hui!'
Confucius praises his favorite student, Yan Hui, whose material poverty did not diminish his inner joy. The praise is doubled for emphasis—'How admirable!'—suggesting that this quality is rare and deeply valued. Yan Hui's serenity comes not from denial of difficulty but from an inner life so rich that external lack cannot define him.
