Steadfast in Poverty, Courteous in Wealth
Zigong proposes a high standard—avoiding flattery in poverty and arrogance in wealth—but Confucius pushes higher: the truly excellent person finds joy even in poverty and maintains gracious propriety even in wealth. The first level avoids vices; the second cultivates virtues. Confucius consistently teaches that material circumstances need not determine moral quality.
Joy in Righteous Poverty
Confucius praises his favorite student, Yan Hui, whose material poverty did not diminish his inner joy. The praise is doubled for emphasis—'How admirable!'—suggesting that this quality is rare and deeply valued. Yan Hui's serenity comes not from denial of difficulty but from an inner life so rich that external lack cannot define him.
