Confucius reacts against ritual (禮) as empty form. For him, the highest value in ritual is 和—harmony and fitting coordination between people. Proper forms are meant to cultivate and express genuine respect and care.
Respecting Siblings
Confucius distinguishes two forms of relating: with friends (朋友), one should be earnestly encouraging, even challenging; with siblings (兄弟), warmth and harmony come first. The distinction is practical: friends can walk away, but siblings share a lifelong bond that depends on affection and patience more than on correction.
Harmonious, Not Identical
One of Confucius' most quoted distinctions: 和 (harmony) preserves differences within a larger unity, like different instruments in an orchestra; 同 (uniformity) erases differences, producing mere conformity. True harmony requires the courage to hold different notes together, not the laziness of making everyone sound the same.
