Harmonious, Not Identical
The Master said, 'The noble person seeks harmony but not uniformity. The petty person seeks uniformity but not harmony.'
One of Confucius' most quoted distinctions: 和 (harmony) preserves differences within a larger unity, like different instruments in an orchestra; 同 (uniformity) erases differences, producing mere conformity. True harmony requires the courage to hold different notes together, not the laziness of making everyone sound the same.
