Respecting Siblings
Zilu asked, 'What must a person be like to be called a true gentleman?' The Master said, 'Earnestly encouraging with friends, and warmly harmonious with brothers—such a one may be called a gentleman.'
Confucius distinguishes two forms of relating: with friends (朋友), one should be earnestly encouraging, even challenging; with siblings (兄弟), warmth and harmony come first. The distinction is practical: friends can walk away, but siblings share a lifelong bond that depends on affection and patience more than on correction.
