Parents sometimes fear that setting boundaries contradicts love. Confucius teaches the opposite: clear boundaries are an expression of deep humaneness. A parent who never says 'no,' who never names harmful behavior, is not being kind—they are being passive. Equally, a parent who criticizes constantly without warmth is not being honest—they are being harsh. The humane parent holds both: deep love for the child and honest disapproval of what harms them. Children feel safer with parents who can do both, because it means the parent sees them clearly and cares enough to guide them.
