Empathy in Action
Zigong asked, 'Is there one word that can serve as a guide for one's whole life?' The Master said, 'Is it not reciprocity? What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.'
This is perhaps the most famous single sentence in the Analects—the negative golden rule. The character 恕 (shù) combines 'heart' (心) and 'like' (如), suggesting 'as if your heart were theirs.' Confucius distills a lifetime of ethics into one practice: before acting toward another, imagine yourself on the receiving end.
