子(zǐ)游(yóu)問(wèn)孝(xiào)。子(zǐ)曰(yuē)：「今(jīn)之(zhī)孝(xiào)者(zhě)，是(shì)謂(wèi)能(néng)養(yǎng)。至(zhì)於(wū)犬(quǎn)馬(mǎ)，皆(jiē)能(néng)有(yǒu)養(yǎng)；不(bú)敬(jìng)，何(hé)以(yǐ)別(bié)乎(hū)？」
Ziyou asked about filial piety. The Master said, 'Today people think filial piety means simply being able to provide. But dogs and horses are also provided for; if there is no respect, what makes it different?'

Confucius distinguishes between material support and true filial devotion. Feeding and housing parents is necessary, but if done without a respectful attitude, it does not rise above the care given to animals. The heart behind the action is decisive.

Parents rightly feel responsible to 'provide' for their children—food, shelter, schooling. Yet Confucius reminds that provision without respect is incomplete. A child who receives many material advantages but rarely feels truly heard or honored may grow up emotionally impoverished. The same applies in how adults care for their own aging parents; task-focused efficiency without gentleness can wound. Children watch the tone of voice, the patience or impatience, with which parents care for elders. When respect and tenderness accompany practical support, the child learns that human beings are not just mouths to feed but persons to honor.
