Zilu asked, 'Should I act immediately upon hearing something right?' The Master said, 'You have a father and older brother to consult—how can you act at once?' Ran Qiu asked the same question. The Master said, 'Yes, act upon it immediately.'

When asked why he gave opposite answers to the same question, Confucius explained: Ran Qiu is timid and needs pushing forward; Zilu is rash and needs holding back. This passage demonstrates not just differentiated teaching but also how Confucius himself 'disagrees' with a one-size-fits-all approach. He respects each person's nature while still guiding them toward the good.

Teaching children how to disagree is one of the most important and least practiced parenting skills. Many families operate on one of two extremes: total obedience (disagreement is rebellion) or total freedom (any opinion goes unchallenged). Confucius models a third way: thoughtful engagement where different views are heard, weighed, and responded to with reason and respect. A child who learns to say, 'I see it differently—here's why,' is developing the courage, humility, and clarity that democratic life requires. This begins at the dinner table, not in a civics class.
