The Calm of the Noble Person
Confucius contrasts the inner state of the 君子 (noble person) with that of the 小人 (petty person). The noble person's heart is 坦蕩蕩—open, spacious, uncramped—while the petty person's is perpetually tense and fretful. This serenity stems from moral clarity and ordered desires.
