The Courage to Be Kind
Confucius makes a clinical observation: without ren, people crumble in hardship and become corrupted by success. Only those who have genuine humaneness can endure difficulty without becoming bitter, and enjoy good times without becoming arrogant. The humane person 'rests' in ren—it is their home, not their performance.

Kindness in Speech
Sima Niu is an impulsive figure who speaks before thinking. Confucius tailors his answer to the student: for this particular person, humaneness begins with slowing down his tongue. The key insight is that careless speech can undo all other virtues. Being 'careful' (訒, rèn) means pausing before words leave the mouth.
