Avoiding Isolation
In just eight characters, Confucius offers one of his most reassuring promises: a virtuous person will never be truly alone. The word 鄰 (lín)—neighbor—suggests that those who cultivate goodness attract companions on the same path. This is not wishful thinking but an observation: shared values create natural bonds. The virtuous life, though sometimes lonely in the short term, draws kindred spirits over time.
