Hospitality of the Heart
The Master said, 'A noble person who is not serious will not inspire respect; learning will not be on a firm foundation. Hold faithfulness and sincerity as your first principles.'
Confucius links gravitas with sincerity. The word 忠 (zhōng, faithfulness) contains the character for 'heart' (心) at its center. True presence is not heaviness or solemnity, but a genuine engagement—being fully there when you are with someone. This is the foundation of what we might call 'hospitality of the heart.'
