Correcting Friends Kindly

子(zǐ)貢(gòng)問(wèn)友(yǒu)。子(zǐ)曰(yuē)：「忠(zhōng)告(gào)而(ér)善(shàn)道(dào)之(zhī)，不(bù)可(kě)則(zé)止(zhǐ)，毋(wú)自(zì)辱(rǔ)焉(yān)。」
Zigong asked about friendship. The Master said, 'Advise them loyally and guide them skillfully. If that is not possible, stop—do not humiliate yourself.'

This passage, revisited from Day 108, focuses here on its relational dimension. Confucius teaches that a true friend speaks up when the other goes astray—but does so with skill (善道之), not harshness. And if the friend refuses to hear, the right response is not to insist endlessly but to withdraw with dignity. True friendship includes the courage to speak hard truths, but also the wisdom to know when words will not be received.

Children need to learn both sides of this wisdom: how to give honest feedback to friends, and when to stop. Many children either say nothing when a friend behaves badly (fearing conflict) or blurt harsh truths that wound (lacking tact). Parents can coach the middle way: helping children find words like, 'I care about you, and that's why I'm saying this,' while also teaching them that if a friend consistently refuses correction, it is not disloyal to step back. Friendship without honesty is hollow; honesty without kindness is cruelty.
